An Enriching School Experience
Physical Education is a core component to the on-going health and welfare of our students. A full range of sports are planned throughout the academic year, which include football, badminton, basketball, touch rugby and swimming. Students have ample opportunity to learn new skills and develop their talents through a range of challenging activities. We encourage students who excel in particular sports to participate in competitions at national or international level and indeed, have international sportspeople within our community.
Straits operates an extensive co-curricular programme for students. A variety of activities are held for one hour every afternoon. Activities are themed to ensure that a range of skills and interests are covered. These themes include Sports; Creativity; school enrichment; as well as Service, Community and Culture. Through participating in activities which are themed in this way the school ensures a balance in experience. Indeed, we value the activity programme highly at SIS, with key learning outcomes attributed to each activity and a continual cycle of evidence that builds a students’ personal record of achievement.
There are also opportunities for students to compete both at inter-house level and for the School in outside competitions, be it sports or otherwise.
Representing the School With Pride - Our Dragons
Physical Education is seen as a big part of school life at Straits International School characterised by students from Nursery to Year 11 having up to two hours of PE every week and an Action themed co-curricular activity once a week. It is important for students to have the chance to display their other skills and talents outside of the usual classroom environment.
All extra-curricular sports undertaken at Straits come under the name ‘Straits Dragons’. Football teams for the U11s, U13s and U15s boys, and Netball teams for the U14s and U16s girls are involved in fixtures against other schools in Penang. For the 2015-16 academic year, all of the previously mentioned secondary teams, along with the newly created U13s girls Football team, will represent the Straits Dragons in this year's PSAC league, competing against other international schools in Penang.
Straits Dragons will also become increasingly involved in friendly competitions with other schools in a range of other sports, especially at Primary level. We are also proud of our students who excel in sports outside of school, particularly in swimming, squash and tennis.
Straits Dragons will continue to grow and form new sports teams in the near future allowing students to become more involved in physical activity and have the opportunity to improve their performances in their chosen sports and their overall wellbeing. There is a very important social element to playing sports and it is something that all students should get a chance to experience and feel a sense of belonging with like-minded others.
